Person-Centred Resource Hub:
Introduction
This resource hub was developed by MSD in partnership with the Whole Person Care Partnership—a collaboration between MSD UK and HIV community and professional organisations. It aims to support people ageing with HIV by promoting person-centered, holistic care and sharing good practice. All content was co-created and agreed equally by all partners, recognising the broader factors that shape health and wellbeing.
This resource exists to support improved quality of life for people growing older with HIV, by facilitating good practice approaches to person-centered holistic care and sharing information that can support people with HIV, those who support them, and health and care services. It is important to note that many factors, including the wider determinants of health, can impact health outcomes, and it is important that this is considered within care planning.
The resource is underpinned by a set of key principles, that are important aspects of ensuring that people growing older with HIV can access the right care and support, at the right time.
1. We must recognise and address the impact of stigma
Stigma—real or anticipated—can prevent people ageing with HIV from fully engaging with care. It may lead to disengagement, selective disclosure, or reliance on specific providers. Tackling stigma is essential to delivering holistic, person-centred care and improving quality of life.
2. We must ensure access through every door for people growing older with HIV
People may enter care through different routes, often via trusted services like HIV clinics. A ‘no wrong door’ approach ensures they can access the right support wherever they begin, with clear pathways into wider services.
3. We must champion quality of life for people growing older with HIV
As more people with HIV grow older, supporting their wellbeing must be central to the UK’s Zero 30 ambition. Holistic, person-centred care that addresses mental, emotional, and social needs can improve treatment adherence and help people live well at every stage of life.
